Tran Phu city beach in Nha Trang — the wide six-kilometer bay with resort skyline and the Khanh Hoa mountains
Tran Phu Beach — Nha Trang’s main city beach and the resort’s most recognizable view.

In short: for walking and shopping, choose the city beach on Tran Phu Boulevard. Travelling with kids? Pick Bai Dai near the airport. The shallow water there runs 100 metres out. For white sand, head to Doc Let, 50 km north. For snorkeling and reefs, look at the islands of Hon Mun and Hon Tam. Finally, for seclusion and honeymoons, book a resort in Ninh Van Bay or Ninh Hoa.

When people say «the beach in Nha Trang», they usually mean the six-kilometre strip along Tran Phu. However, within a 60-kilometre radius there are five more beaches. Each has its own audience, infrastructure and mood. As a result, the same traveller can fall for Doc Let yet feel let down by Bai Dai — or the other way around. Below we compare the six main options. Then we help you pick the one that fits your trip. If you haven’t settled on the timing yet, see our companion guide on Nha Trang weather by month. It covers temperature and rainfall by month, plus typhoon risk windows.

Tran Phu — for travellers without a car or with one hotel and a packed schedule

Have you flown in for five to seven nights? If you don’t plan to rent a scooter or take taxis for half-day trips, book a hotel on Tran Phu. The city strip runs roughly seven kilometres. It stretches from Cau Da Port in the south to Bai Tien Beach in the north. Moreover, the promenade is wide. You’ll find sculptures, outdoor gym equipment, palms and rented loungers along it. Lifeguards and services operate from 07:00 to 20:00.

However, there are two downsides. First, the sand is yellow and coarse. In look, it’s closer to the Adriatic than to the Maldives. Second, the high season runs December–March and July–August. During those months the centre gets crowded, especially in front of popular hotels. In addition, from November to February the shoreline picks up notable waves and rip currents. Therefore, check the lifeguard flag before getting in the water.

Best for: travellers with school-age children, couples without strong demands, and anyone whose priority is the city. Here the beach plays a supporting role. Tran Phu is also great for an early morning walk or run before the crowds arrive.

Hon Mun, Hon Tam and Hon Tre — for snorkeling, reefs and theme parks

Nha Trang Bay has nine inhabited islands. However, three of them define what a typical «island day» looks like.

Hon Mun — Vietnam’s first marine park

Hon Mun is a marine protected area. About 350 species of coral and 230 species of reef fish are on official record there. Visibility runs 10 to 20 metres between March and August. As a result, this is the best snorkeling and diving spot on the central Vietnamese coast. However, the island itself has very few beaches. Moreover, you can’t reach it independently — only by boat tour. Have you never put on scuba gear before and want to try? Then the beginner discover-scuba dive at Hon Mun keeps an instructor by your side. The dive stays in shallow water. Alternatively, if you’d rather skip diving and just spend a fun day on the water, three islands with snorkeling and a foam party on board hits several reefs. It also includes lunch and adds entertainment for groups.

Hon Tam — gentle entry for kids and beginners

Hon Tam is the middle-ground island. It suits travellers who want a coral garden without Hon Mun’s crowds. The island sits roughly seven kilometres from shore. Moreover, the entry is gentle and the water is calm. There’s a small reef close to the beach. Therefore, it’s ideal for first-time snorkelers and children. In addition, the island has a resort with restaurants and umbrellas. A convenient day format is Hon Tam: beach, snorkeling and a fishing village. It bundles transfer, boat, lunch and free beach time.

Hon Tre — cable car and theme park

Hon Tre is the largest island in the bay. It’s connected to the mainland by the world’s longest over-sea cable car — 3,320 metres, a Guinness World Record. Furthermore, the island hosts the VinWonders theme park with a water park and aquarium. It also houses several Vinpearl resorts with private beaches. Overall, this is the «one day, full family programme» scenario.

Bai Dai (Long Beach) — for families with small kids and travellers near the airport

Bai Dai is a long sand bar 20–25 km south of Nha Trang. Moreover, it sits only 10–12 km from Cam Ranh International Airport. New hotels and resorts are spreading along this coast. The shoreline runs more than 15 kilometres. In addition, the shallow water extends far out — waist-deep at 100 metres from shore. The bottom is flat sand.

As a result, it’s the best setup for families with kids under seven. A child can walk a long way into the sea without going above the waist. Furthermore, waves are minimal between April and September, and underwater visibility is good. However, from November to March Bai Dai also becomes the main surf spot in Vietnam. Surf schools and board rentals operate along the strip. Wave heights range from half a metre to three metres. Therefore, families with teenagers won’t run out of things to do either.

However, there are downsides too. The wild stretches outside the resort fences can be littered, especially after the northeast monsoon. In addition, beach-bar and lounger prices run higher than in the city. Transport from town means a taxi (around 350,000 VND one way) or a rented scooter.

Best for: families with small children, late-arriving flyers, winter-season surfers, and couples who value space over a vibe. Moreover, you can pair a beach day with something unusual. For example, a tandem paragliding or paramotor flight over the sea and rice fields launches right in the Bai Dai / Cam Ranh area. It gives you the whole bay from above.

Doc Let — for a day trip away from the city and proper white sand

Doc Let is the postcard beach of Khanh Hoa province. It has white fine sand, firm underfoot, turquoise water and casuarina groves along the shore. The beach sits 50 km north of Nha Trang in the Ninh Hoa area. The trip takes 60–80 minutes by taxi (around 750,000 VND round trip). Alternatively, you can take the public bus №12 in 60 minutes for 40,000 VND one way.

The water here is calm. A chain of islands shelters the bay from the open sea. Therefore, waves are rare. Moreover, the waist-deep depth holds out for about 100 metres. Entry to the serviced part costs about 30,000 VND. A sun lounger with umbrella runs 70,000–100,000 VND per set. However, exchange rates fluctuate quickly, so check the current rate before your trip.

Doc Let works as a day-trip destination rather than a place to base your stay. There are cafés and beach cocktails. However, no serious restaurants operate here. If you’re used to the variety of Tran Phu, you’ll be bored by sunset. Therefore, most travellers book a six-to-eight-hour taxi. They spend the day on the sand and return to Nha Trang for dinner. The easiest format is an organised tour. For example, we run a group excursion to Ba Ho Waterfall and Doc Let Beach. The morning brings a three-tier jungle waterfall. Then you get half a day on the white sand.

Best for: couples and solo travellers chasing one photogenic day. Repeat visitors who already know Nha Trang and want something new also enjoy it. In addition, parents of toddlers who don’t mind the drive get calmer water here.

Ninh Van and Ninh Hoa — for honeymoons and digital detox

North of Nha Trang, across the bay, lie two coves accessible only by boat. These are Ninh Van Bay and Ninh Hoa. Here you’ll find boutique resorts such as Six Senses Ninh Van Bay. It offers 62 pool villas on a wooded hillside, a private beach and 20-minute speedboat access from Nha Trang. As a result, this is the best stretch for travellers who value privacy and silence.

A more low-key version of the same vibe used to operate as Jungle Beach Resort. It had bamboo bungalows, no air-conditioning and a back-to-nature focus. However, as of 2025–2026 the project has been opening and closing on and off. Therefore, check status before booking. Alternatively, look at Wild Beach Resort in Ninh Hoa.

Best for: honeymooners, remote workers planning a month of true offline time, and repeat visitors tired of standard resorts. However, it’s not for families with small kids or travellers planning intense excursions. Getting in and out of these bays is slow.

Pick your beach by purpose

  • Families with kids under 7: Bai Dai or Doc Let — shallow water, no waves. If you’re choosing a hotel, base in Bai Dai (Cam Ranh) and drive into the city as needed.
  • Snorkeling and diving: islands only. Hon Mun for maximum visibility and reefs, Hon Tam for beginners and kids.
  • Surfing and surf lessons: Bai Dai, November to March. The rest of the year is for swimming.
  • Nightlife and bars: the central section of Tran Phu. Clubs, bars and restaurants concentrate here. Daytime is a short beach story, evenings stretch long.
  • Honeymoon and seclusion: Ninh Van Bay (Six Senses) or Wild Beach Resort in Ninh Hoa. Confirm airport-to-resort transfer before booking.
  • Budget trip: Tran Phu plus a day trip to Doc Let. You’ll get 80% of what Nha Trang offers at a reasonable price.
  • One first day in town: morning on Tran Phu, lunch, then a boat tour with stops at Hon Mun or Hon Tam. That covers three of the six beaches in 24 hours.

FAQ: common questions about Nha Trang beaches

Which beach in Nha Trang is best for families with kids?

Bai Dai (Long Beach), about 20–25 km south of the city centre. The shallow shoreline extends more than 100 metres out. Moreover, the slope is gentle and the sand is firm with no rocks. Alternatively, Doc Let north of the city is a similar option. However, it takes a one-hour drive each way.

Where is the cleanest, prettiest sand near Nha Trang?

On Doc Let, around 50 km north of the city. There the sand is white, fine, firm underfoot and free of seaweed. In contrast, the city sand is yellow and coarser. Hon Mun and Hon Tam also have white coral sand. However, their strips are short.

Which beach is best for snorkeling near Nha Trang?

Not a mainland beach — head to Hon Mun Island. It is Vietnam’s first marine protected area. About 350 species of coral and 230 species of reef fish live there. Moreover, it has the best underwater visibility on the central coast. However, Hon Mun is only accessible by boat tour.

How much does it cost to enter Doc Let beach?

Entry to the serviced section is around 30,000 VND. A sun lounger with umbrella costs 70,000–100,000 VND per set. In addition, the local bus №12 from Nha Trang charges 40,000 VND one way. However, exchange rates fluctuate — check the current rate before your trip.

Is Tran Phu city beach safe for swimming?

Yes. Lifeguards staff the city beach and run services from 07:00 to 20:00. However, the sand is coarse and yellow, and the beach gets busy in peak season. Moreover, from November to February waves and rip currents can appear. Therefore, always check the lifeguard flag before entering the water.

Where can I learn to surf in Nha Trang?

On Bai Dai Beach, around 20–30 km south of the city. Surf schools rent boards and run lessons there. The wave season runs from November to March. However, the rest of the year Bai Dai is better suited to swimming and stand-up paddling.

Bottom line: more beaches, sharper plan

The most common mistake first-time visitors make is treating Nha Trang as «one beach». In reality, there are six very different scenarios within an hour’s drive. For example, a family with a toddler and a group of surfers may end up on the same beach — Bai Dai. However, they go for completely different reasons. Similarly, a diver and a honeymooning bride both leave the city. The first heads to Hon Mun. The second goes to Ninh Van Bay. So decide what you came for, and then choose the shore.
