Nha Trang beach and Hon Tre Island during the dry season — the best time to visit Vietnam is February to April
Nha Trang’s main city beach in March–April — the «golden» period with warm sea, minimal rainfall, and comfortable air temperatures.

Short answer: the best time to visit Nha Trang is February through April. Rainfall is light (15–30 mm a month), air sits at 27–30 °C, sea at 25–27 °C. The worst months are October and November: 300–330 mm of rain, typhoon risk and possible flooding. May through August is hot (up to 33 °C) and crowded, but the sea is at its warmest.

Nha Trang is Vietnam’s flagship beach resort, and its climate is tropical monsoon. In practice, the year splits cleanly into two seasons: dry (January–August) and wet (September–December). However, inside the dry season sits a «golden» spring and a hot summer; meanwhile, inside the wet season sits a relatively mild December and a dangerous October–November window. Below we break down what to pick for your goals, budget and heat tolerance.

Figures are 30+ year averages (climatestotravel.com, climate-data.org, weather-and-climate.com). However, single-year deviations happen: for example, on 19–20 November 2025, Khanh Hoa province received 100 to 350+ mm of rain in 24 hours, flooding the western districts of Nha Trang.

Dry season in Nha Trang (January–August)

Eight months in a row with almost no serious rainfall — this is exactly what makes Nha Trang popular. However, «dry season» is a loose label: in practice, it contains three different regimes.

January–February: a soft start

These are the coolest months. Days at 27–28 °C, nights around 22 °C, sea at 25 °C. Rain is occasional: January catches the tail of the monsoon (~45 mm), February is the driest month of the year (~15 mm). Crowds are thin, hotel prices ease after the New Year peak, and most visa formalities for Russian and CIS travellers are quick.

The one downside — after a hot summer the ocean has cooled, and 25 °C water can feel a touch fresh for visitors arriving from Thailand or Bali. Nevertheless, it’s perfectly swimmable: in fact, Nha Trang’s beach season doesn’t shut down at any point in the year.

March–April: the «golden» window

The two best months of the year for most travellers. Air at 29–30 °C by day, 23–25 °C at night, sea warmed to 26–27 °C. Rainfall sits at 20–30 mm for the entire month, most days are clear, and humidity is still tolerable. The sea is calm and underwater visibility hits 15–20 metres — peak season for diving and snorkelling. Conditions on land are equally comfortable: there’s sun, there’s no heat yet.

April brings local holidays: Vietnam celebrates Liberation Day on 30 April and Labour Day on 1 May. As a result, by late April prices climb and waves of Asian tourists arrive. So if those dates matter, lock in your hotel and transfer at least six weeks ahead.

May–August: heat and peak crowds

From May temperatures climb to 32 °C and humidity follows. In particular, June through August is the hottest stretch: average highs of 32–33 °C and overnight lows that don’t dip below 26 °C. Meanwhile, the sea hits 29 °C — practically a swimming pool. Rain still falls, although it comes in short 30–60 minute storms, usually in the second half of the day, totalling only 30–50 mm a month.

Summer’s big upside is peak water activity. Conditions stay calm and clear, and at Hon Mun and Hon Tam the snorkelling is excellent. On the downside, however, this is also peak Vietnamese domestic tourism. As a result, families travel for school holidays, hotel prices peak for the year, and beaches get crowded.

Rainy season in Nha Trang (September–December)

The northeast monsoon delivers central Vietnam’s annual rainfall in four months. Specifically, Nha Trang collects about 750–800 mm over that window — more than half its yearly total. However, the «rainy season» isn’t uniform.

September: first downpours

A transitional month. The air is still hot (31 °C by day) and the sea warm (29 °C — technically the yearly peak); however, rain starts mid-month. In total, about 150 mm fall over the month, on 10–12 wet days, usually in the evening or overnight. As a result, mornings and afternoons often stay sunny.

Overall, September is a compromise: summer temperatures without July’s crowds and at noticeably lower prices. It’s a good fit if warm sea matters and short storms are acceptable. If a rainy day hits, however, hold off on sea trips and switch to land formats — a jeep tour around the countryside or mountain-lake fishing run even in drizzle.

October–November: typhoons and floods

The riskiest months to visit. Rainfall hits 300 mm in October and 330 mm in November, with rain falling on 18–19 days. Importantly, these aren’t summer cloudbursts but extended overcast days with drizzle and heavy thunderstorms. As a result, the sea is often choppy and coastal island excursions get cancelled.

Officially, the Vietnamese typhoon season runs from July to early November. Within that window, the central coast — from Thanh Hoa down to Lam Dong — is most exposed September–November. In fact, over the last 10 years three typhoons made direct landfall on Nha Trang, all in the window from late October to early November. For example, the most destructive was Typhoon Damrey in 2017; in November 2025 Typhoon Kalmaegi passed through neighbouring provinces. Moreover, local flooding can happen without a named typhoon: on 19–20 November 2025 western Nha Trang flooded after 350+ mm of rain in 24 hours combined with coordinated reservoir releases.

Plan to fly in during this period only if the trip is locked in, price is a hard constraint, and you accept that part of the itinerary may not happen. In particular, diving, island trips and water sports are all conditional.

December: monsoon tail

By December rainfall intensity drops, although the wet-day count stays high — about 21 days. In total, the month collects roughly 269 mm. The air, however, is comfortable (27 °C by day, 22 °C at night), and the sea sits at 26 °C. Additionally, by late December weather usually stabilises, and many resorts run Christmas and New Year programmes under clear skies.

Overall, December works for travellers willing to trade capricious weather for low prices and quiet beaches early in the month, or who want to see in the New Year at noticeable savings versus Phuket or Bali.

Which month suits which traveller

The same month plays differently for different visitors. A quick guide by travel goal:

  • Families with children: March–April and June. Warm sea, few storms, no extended rain. On land the Kong Forest zipline — Vietnam’s longest aerial course — works well, suitable for kids from age six. Avoid October and November: keeping a child entertained under rain is hard even without typhoons.
  • Divers and snorkellers: March–August. Visibility 15–20 metres, calm sea, full-day format works on the Hon Mun, Hon Tam and Hon Mieu islands — take a day on the water with fishing, snorkelling and BBQ on board. If you hold a recognised certification, look separately at certified diving at Hon Mun — a marine protected area with coral and fish life unmatched elsewhere near Nha Trang.
  • Young and party travellers: July–August. Maximum activity, open-air bars, daytime yacht runs. Evenings — night squid fishing with dinner and live guitar on board. Prices peak too.
  • Quiet trips for couples: February and September. Warm air, warm sea, minimal crowds, mid-range prices. The Viet Breeze morning sea tour fits well — early departure with an empty bay and no midday heat.
  • Budget travel: late December (after the monsoon eases) and January. Plenty of accommodation, lower prices, weather already stable.
  • Surf and waves: November–December. Not a classic surf season, but bigger swell — for experienced surfers. Regular swimmers should stay on the beach during this window.

When Nha Trang is cheaper, and when it isn’t

Hotel and flight prices in Nha Trang track two calendars: international and domestic Vietnamese. In particular, international tourists fill the resort December through March (winter escape) and again in July–August. Meanwhile, domestic flows peak June–August and on Vietnamese holidays: 30 April – 1 May, 2 September, and Lunar New Year (Tet — 6 February 2027, with official holidays 3–11 February).

As a result, the most expensive months are July–August and the winter peak (late December – early January, plus Tet week). Conversely, the cheapest months are October and November — paid for in rain. Overall, the sweet spot for price versus weather sits in February, March, May and September.

Bottom line: which month to pick

When weather is the priority and there’s no room for compromise, fly in March or April. For travellers who care more about saving money than dodging rain, late December and January work well. Meanwhile, if you want heat, clear water and a buzzing town, July–August fits — although you’ll need to accept high prices and crowds. October and November, by contrast, are best avoided unless the trip is already booked.

Overall, Nha Trang is a flexible destination: swimming works year-round, since sea temperatures never drop below 25 °C. Therefore, the main risk isn’t cold but autumn rain and typhoons. In practice, check the 7–10 day forecast before flying out — tropical weather is predictable on average, although it can still surprise on a specific day.
